Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

We recognize student leadership by incorporating their suggestions into our planning. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we acknowledge student contributions in our classrooms, during school announcements, in our newsletters, at our assemblies, in our principal’s report to school council and at the end-of-year ceremonies. Some years, the grade 4, 5, and 6 students participate in an election campaign and student council members are voted into position by their peers. Student Council members meet with teacher leaders on a regular basis to prepare school-wide spirit activities and provide suggestions for school improvement.

Manordale Public School has students representing many countries and encourages students to celebrate their own culture as well as Canadian. The Global Village Club has students learning about various cultures and world issues.

Our students participate in a wide range of fund raising events. Our students participate in United Way, UNICEF, Jump Rope for Heart and the Terry Fox Run. In December, students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items for our food drive and to bring in change for the “Caring and Sharing Christmas Exchange”.

The students are engaged in a variety of activities, some of games led by our Playground Activity Leaders (PALS), thanks to a partnership with the City of Ottawa and to the dedication of staff. Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of house leagues, sport teams, clubs and activities, where they have the opportunity to develop their social and leadership skills.

Staff

Our diverse staff has a wealth of expertise in all aspects of education. Some of our teachers have degrees in music and visual arts while others have extensive backgrounds in physical education, special education and language learning. Educational Assistants (EA) and Early Childhood Educators (ECE) have an amazing expertise and are engaged in conversations and daily action for student support. We have, for the second year adult Lunch Time Monitors to support our kindergarten students during the lunch hour. All staff members continue their professional learning through school networks, professional learning communities (PLC), workshops, and university and professional qualifications courses. We support opportunities for further professional growth and collaboration. There are numerous opportunities for staff members to lead activities and special teams; for example our chief custodian leads every year, a fabulous holiday meal, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army. We recognize staff leadership through letters of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals and our principal’s report to the school council.

One of our teachers has received the Majic 100’s Golden Apple Award and our chief custodian has been a recipient of the Director’s Citation Award. Our office administrator has been recognized as a positive leader at our Board’s Annual Leadership Conference.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

We are fortunate to have a solid core of volunteers composed of parents, guardians and community members who work tirelessly to help students in the classroom, library, on fieldtrips and in our food programs. They also participate in committees and assist with special events such as our book fairs. The members of the Manordale Family School Council play a very active role in working with the principal and members of the school community.

We regularly thank our special volunteers on an informal basis and through our annual “Volunteer Tea” where we can formally and publicly acknowledge the tremendous contribution of our volunteers in helping us sustain a vital learning community.

Community

We have a partnership with the Nepean-Rideau-Osgoode Community Resource Centre (NROCRC), and offer a free supervised homework and after school club. Four days a week, students have a snack, assistance with their homework, time to play cooperative games and each day wraps up with time dedicated to literacy. We are looking to extend our partnership with NROCRC to offer a number of students access to the Big Brother/Big Sister in School program, as well as a series of workshop for parents.

Manordale is a partner, with other educational institutions welcoming every year a number of COOP students, university student teachers, international guest teachers and students from numerous Algonquin College programs. We have received tremendous support from members of the school community in raising money to finance the purchase of a new play structure. We received very generous donations from parents, community members and local businesses and successfully gathered enough funds to build a primary/junior play structure for our students to enjoy.

With support from the Education Foundation and Ottawa Network for Education we offer our students a nutrition program, where students access nutritious snacks throughout the day. We welcome the assistance and support of our local merchants and establishments, and recognize our community partners through our school announcements, school newsletters, school website, principal’s report to school council, and letters of thanks. Our community partners are invited to our special events and award ceremonies.

Our staff and students are very enthusiastic about giving back to the community. We participate in United Way, the Terry Fox Run and Jump Rope for Heart. Every December, a fabulous meal was orchestrated by our recently retired chief custodian and staff were invited to purchase tickets for a turkey luncheon with the staff donating the food and 100% of the proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
