Sensory Snacks!

Sensory Snacks-Classroom
Sensory Snacks

A sensory snack is a brief, purposeful activity designed to provide sensory input, helping children regulate their energy, focus, and emotions. These activities—such as stretching, deep breathing, using fidget tools, or engaging in movement breaks—support self-regulation and enhance learning. Sensory snacks are particularly beneficial for students who need additional sensory input to stay engaged and ready to learn.

How We Support Sensory Needs at School:
-Movement breaks (jumping jacks, chair push-ups, wall pushes)
-Deep breathing exercises to promote calm and focus
-Fidget tools for quiet, hands-on engagement
-Flexible seating options (wiggle cushions, standing desks)
-Heavy work activities (carrying books, pushing chairs)
Ideas for Home:
-Active play (yoga, trampoline, obstacle courses)
-Blowing bubbles or using a pinwheel for breath control
-Squeezing stress balls or playdough for tactile input
-Listening to calming music or rhythmic sounds

By incorporating sensory snacks at school and home, children can develop self-regulation skills that support their well-being and learning success.

Supporting Communication Through Visuals: Core Communication Board

Example of Core Communication Board

At our school, we use Core Communication Boards to support students who communicate primarily through visuals. This tool provides a collection of commonly used words, phrases, and symbols that help students express their needs, thoughts, and ideas effectively. By integrating the Core Communication Board into daily activities, we empower students to engage more confidently in their learning environment. We encourage parents to use this resource at home to promote consistent communication and reinforce language development. Together, we can enhance communication skills and ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed.
